Hershel McGriff started #04 32 times from 1972-1993, most notably for Petty Enterprises in the 1970s. McGriff is a West Coast late model driver who only ran one full season in Cup, but consistently made starts at the West Coast tracks.
In 2001 Jason Leffler drove the #01 Dodge for Chip Ganassi Racing, with little success. Ganassi brought in road racing specialist Scott Pruett to pilot the #01 car at Sonoma, in order to gain some much needed owners points for the car. Ganassi fielded an extra car for Leffler that weekend, #04, but he DNQ’d.
